Jane Schindler-Ord

My relationship with sound, and with music, began from an early age, remembering my mum and both my grandmothers singing to me to soothe me as a small child. I also remember listening to the storms and wind howling round the house and through the trees at night, feeling how powerful the wind was and both fearing and being in awe of it.

Growing up, I was introduced to the piano at an early age by my nana; I had some lessons, but didn’t really take it up. I also had a fascination with wind instruments, particularly the flute, though I didn’t really start to play it until much later on. As a young adult I enjoyed playing the penny whistle, ‘jamming’ along with friends who played guitars and sang.

My voice was an instrument that I longed to use from an early age. I sang to my children when they were small and loved this (possibly more than they did!). I had friends who sang confidently, though I never had the courage to sing like they did. As I got older, my voice and confidence started to grow louder. I remember attending a workshop at the Chalice Well with Chloe Goodchild which was transformative.

I am a psychotherapist, hypnotherapist, sound practitioner, clinical supervisor and trainer, working with individuals and groups. My background is in Gestalt and Body Process Psychotherapy, and that grounding in the relationship between mind, body, and lived experience runs through all of my work.

I came to sound therapy through personal experience and a deep connection to the power of sound. I later trained in drum, gong, rattle and bowls, and completed my womb healer practitioner training in 2024. These experiences with the therapeutic use of sound have shaped the way that I work, and they feel like natural extensions of what I have always been drawn to: working with the body as a place of knowing how to heal.

My sound sessions are shaped by what is present rather than by a fixed structure. Sometimes the work is quiet and receptive. Sometimes it becomes more active. Sound can reach places that words and conversation sometimes circle around for a long time.

The womb healing I offer is holistic, working across physical and emotional levels. I work with issues around fertility, sexuality, identity, loss, ancestral trauma as well as a more general reconnection with creativity and inner space. Sound, breath, imagery, and simple ritual are all part of the ceremony.

Across all of the work I do is my intention, to create a space where change can happen, at whatever pace is right for the person in front of me.

Further background

I have been working as a psychotherapist for many years across a range of settings including work with young people, adults, and couples. My clinical background has always been body-oriented. Gestalt therapy pays close attention to what is happening in the body alongside what is being said, and Body Process Psychotherapy goes further, treating the body as the primary site of the therapeutic work.

Sound fits naturally into that framework. I came to it not as a separate discipline but as an extension of what I was already doing. I had expected it to be relaxing. I had not expected it to be as directly therapeutic as it turned out to be.

Alongside my sound work, I co-run Devon Counselling College with James, where I lead the training programmes and deliver courses in counselling, Gestalt Therapy, Supervision, and Working with Young People. I have developed and delivered bespoke training in the field of mental health, child development and working with children in care for schools, charities and businesses across the UK.
