Drum

The drum is one of the oldest instruments in human history. Long before it became a therapeutic tool, it was already being used in ceremony, to alter states, mark transitions, and bring communities together in shared rhythm. That deep familiarity of the drumbeat is part of what makes it effective; the body already knows the drum.

In therapeutic work, the drum functions as a rhythmic and grounding instrument. Its tone and pulse can support regulation, presence, and a sense of connection within the session. There is a lot of research to support the healing power of the drum, individually and in group settings.

Working with the drum

We both offer individual therapeutic sessions using the drum. James brings a long personal relationship with it that predates his formal qualifications by some years, encompassing sacred drumming, drum circles, drum birthing ceremonies, and drum making. Jane brings her body-oriented clinical background and training in Sound Healing with the Drum, both of which inform the session and respond to the client.

The drum work can be gentle and rhythmic. At other times it can be used more dynamically, shifting in pace or intensity to support transitions and shift blocked energy within a session. It is not used to fill silence. It is played with intention, in response to what is present.

Drum circles are another way we both work with the drum. The power of coming together in a shared space, with a shared purpose can be transformative. If you would like to host space for a drum circle, or come along to a pre-arranged one, please get in touch. We can provide a drum if you don’t have one.

What the drum can support

Drum work can support:

  • grounding and nervous system regulation
  • rhythmic settling
  • emotional processing
  • a sense of connection or presence
  • embodied awareness
  • access to deeper states of awareness
  • to move ‘blocked’ energy
  • integration of experience during or after other therapeutic work

The drum may be used in both individual and group settings.
